New E-mail from Administration - TENTATIVE AGREEMENT REACHED

North Bay, ON, November 8, 2009 - Following the scheduled negotiating
session on Sunday November 8, Nipissing University and its full-time
faculty reached a tentative settlement.

Nipissing University president Lesley Lovett-Doust and Todd Horton,
president of the Nipissing University Faculty Association (NUFA)
announced that a tentative settlement had been reached. The settlement
is expected to be ratified over the coming weeks.

"We're pleased to be able to get back to what's important to us, and
that's our students," says Todd Horton, NUFA president.

"I want to thank the University and Faculty bargaining teams who have
worked tirelessly over several months to reach a fair and reasonable
agreement. Their constructive efforts will allow Nipissing to move
onward and upward, as we build sustainability through the new Strategic
Plan," says Lesley Lovett-Doust, president of Nipissing University.

  4. As posted on Facebook conversation on NipU strike:

    Great news!

I still think that there should be an independent Student Representative Board created to sit at the table as well. It's mandate would be to ensure and promote Student issues and concerns are being put to the forefront. Not to chose a side, but to keep Students informed and provide focus.

I am not sure how this would happen, or if a Student/Customer has the power to demand that the services contracted and paid for are received? If Students don't stand up and get involved then their well-being will always be secondary. As mentioned before, each Student pays over $18/year to the Canadian Federation of Students, this is a resource that should be milked and mined to place the Student issues formost in the minds of both Faculty and Administration. Is there a Student Ombudsman?

This is a regular cycle of negotiations, so this will happen again and again. Student involvement might take some of the subtrafuge and posturing out of the process.

I am most interested to see what the new contract will say about Student interests. The current trend of 'Death by Phd' at NipU has me concerned about Students' current and future quality of education. After all it's all about the end product, right? In a university that is 'education centred' I am not sure how having all full-time/tenured/contract professors attaining or maintaing doctorates is of benefit to the Students. Professors will be occupied/focused/achieving/petitioning with thier interests in mind; publish or perish. In my personal experience a Phd does not mean that that individual professsor can teach. It is all about delivering the message, right? By forcing Mastered professors to become Phd's or out the door is Nipissing losing some of its best professors? The university should be concerned with the quality of TEACHING and not research dollars and street credibility that comes with doctorates. Proof is in the pudding and it will be the quality of the Students that NipU graduates and their individual success and achievements that will speak volumes to future Students, professionals and employers alike.

Students need to realize that they are the largest force on campus and can directly influence the quality of education they receive. It will take some organization, research and committment but it can be done. We shall see what happens over the next few years if there is interest amongst the Student body to make their voice and concerns heard above the rhetoric and bartering.

Those are my thoughts on this process so far. We shall see how this has all played out and how it impacts on Students in the upcoming weeks ... Thanks for posting all of this information Ian! A needed service for Students.

  5. Just a little bit of information from the 'other side of the campus.' Canadore faculty is without a contract and according to my sources negotiations have all but stalled. What does this mean for Canadore Students and what effect/affect will this have on the campus as a whole?: 5150

Just thought you might be interested in this little tid-bit of news Ian and all.
